Gerrad We Must Be Realistic.
England captain Steven Gerrard has urged
supporters not to pile pressure on them
ahead of next year's World Cup.
Victory over Poland at Wembley on Tuesday
secured their place at the finals in Brazil but
Gerrard is keen to manage expectations
after experiencing disappointment at
previous tournaments.
"From my experience of going in to World
Cups, people talk about golden generations
and that we are one of the favourites, that
this will be our year and stuff like that," he
said.
"That creates a false pressure, and unfair
pressure because it's a very tough
tournament to go in to. This time around
people will be more realistic.
"I think the important thing is now that
people don't get carried away and start
putting us with teams like Spain and
thinking that everyone is fine and we are a
fantastic team.
"I think we are a good team, I think we can
still get better, I think we have got a good
blend of youth and experience.
"Against Poland first half we were fantastic,
but second half we showed we still have to
improve to compete with the best."
The Liverpool skipper remains upbeat about
England's chances at the World Cup though
and is keen for them to progress past the
quarter-final stage, something they have
not done since Italia 90.
"Everyone wants to try and improve on that
quarter-final, that is the hurdle we have
struggled to get over," he added.
"And that is the reason why the message I
want to send out is that we need to
improve, keep getting stronger, if we are to
get over that hurdle."

Lionel Messi returned to training with Barcelona on Monday as he continued his recovery from a thigh strain sustained at Almeria at the end of last month.
The striker did not join up with Argentina, who had already secured their place at next year's World Cup finals in Brazil, for their last qualifiers against Peru and Uruguay, remaining in Spain for treatment.
Barça's next match is away to Osasuna on Saturday, though with a Champions League game at Milan the following Tuesday it remains to be seen whether coach, Gerardo Martino, will risk him in domestic competition this weekend.
Messi "has taken another step forward in his recovery," the Spanish champions said on their website (www.fcbarcelona.es).
Messi has scored eight goals in six La Liga appearances and scored a hat-trick against Ajax in his sole Champions League outing this season.

England coach Roy Hodgson has warned his players that the job is only
“half done” as they close in on qualification for the FIFA World Cup.
But he has every faith in his squad to go on and book their place in Brazil next year when they face Poland in their final qualifier at Wembley on Tuesday.
Hodgson’s men retained their unbeaten qualifying record with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Montenegro on Friday, as a man-of-the-match display from Andros Townsend – capped off by a stunning second-half goal – gave them the win they needed.
The result kept them in control of Group H, but Hodgson knows that only a similar outcome against Poland will guarantee automatic passage to the finals.
“The job’s half done,” he insisted. “If we want to qualify direct we need to win against Poland on Tuesday night. That won’t be easy.
“That game will be very difficult. I watched them (Poland), in the first half they played very well against Ukraine (a 1-0 defeat on Friday). They had the best goal-scoring opportunities.
“If they play as well against us on Tuesday as they did against Ukraine in the first half then it will be a tough game.
“But I always back the players. I trust them.

The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a 37-year-old man, Ajibola Idowu, for allegedly kidnapping the Daughter of his landlord for three years.
The police said that after Brown had given birth to the child, Ajibola refused to allow the child access to immunisation.
As a result, the child was said to have contracted polio disease and subsequently became crippled.
Lagos Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Damasus Ozoani, said that Ajibola, was arrested along with his mother, Ebun, who allegedly conspired with him to commit the act.
He said, “Brown, a 400 level student of Business Administration at the Lagos State University, was kidnapped by Ajibola who kept her in captivity with his family for “three years between 2010 and 2013.
“On September 19, 2013, policemen from Area E Command, went to the Sagamu area of Ogun State to rescue the victim and also arrested the mother of the abductor, who watched over the victim. Ajibola was later arrested in the Idumota area of Lagos Island.
“During the three years, Ajibola kept Brown in three locations -Oshogbo, Osun State, where she spent six months; Bariga, Lagos, where she spent six months; and Sagamu, Ogun State, where she spent about two years.
“Ajibola forcefully impregnated Brown while in captivity. She delivered a baby girl, who later became deformed as a result of Ajibola’s refusal to have the baby immunised against the Polio virus.”
Brown described her ordeal in the hands of her abductor as a journey through the valley of the shadow of death. She said she was abducted at her father’s house in the Ebute Meta area of Lagos State.
She said, “I can’t even remember how he kidnapped me. All I know is that he held me captive for three years. It’s as if I was under a spell. Even when I was going to give birth, he did not allow me to go to a hospital. The baby was delivered at home and he was the one giving me medication.
“Even one day, when state officials came to the area to immunise children, he said he would not allow the child to be immunised, saying the drugs had been poisoned. Once, when I tried to leave, he threatened to kill me.”

She said the ex-minister’s comments on the aviation sector were capable of misleading the public. Oduah spoke at the Civil Air Navigation Services Organization Conference organized in partnership with the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), in Abuja.
The event was tagged: “Transforming ATM Performance.” Oduah said: “When you see ignorant people in particular, I have sympathy for them.
This is because when you speak out of context, when you speak under whatever influence you are under, you speak incorrectly and mislead innocent Nigerians.
